Ingredient notes and substitutions
White beans – Cannellini (white kidney beans) or navy beans are perfect for this dip. Navy beans are smaller and have a slightly creamier texture compared to cannellini beans and either one will work.
Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a fresh flavor. If fresh lemon juice is unavailable, you can use half the amount of concentrated lemon juice.
Garlic – If fresh garlic is not available you can replace it with a quarter teaspoon of garlic powder or you can use a quarter cup of diced white onion onion if you don’t like the flavor of garlic.
Feta cheese – This leaves a nice tangy taste to the dip and highly recommend not leaving this out. Unless you have dairy allergies or follow a vegan diet. In that case, you can add 1/4 cup nutritional yeast or use vegan feta cheese instead.

Recipe variations

Roasted Red Peppers – Add roasted peppers to the dip to add the smoky sweetness which will pair perfectly with cheese will and another dimension of flavor.
Kalamata Olives – For a tangy twist, add a quarter cup of chopped kalamata olives for a Mediterranean flair.
Jalapenos – For a spicy kick, add a chopped jalapeno pepper or a dash of red pepper flakes to the food processor.
Roasted garlic and herbs – Use a head of roasted garlic instead of fresh garlic along with your favorite fresh herbs.
How to Store Leftovers
Store leftover white bean dip in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container. Before sealing the container, drizzle a little olive oil over the surface of the dip, which will help it maintain its smooth texture. When it’s time to serve again, give the dip a good stir to mix in the oil and adjust the consistency as needed.
Tips
- Be sure to drain and rinse the canned white beans thoroughly under cold water to remove excess sodium and starch.
- For a creamier dip, soften the cheese by letting it come to room temperature or microwave it for a few seconds.
- Blend the ingredients in stages, when the garlic is blended with lemon juice, the juice will remove some of the bite of fresh garlic.
