Ingredient notes and substitutions
Bread - Baguette bread or French bread is the perfect size to make this cheese bread. You can also experiment with different types of bread, they even taste great on regular bread and cut it into bite-sized squares.
Cheese - Any type of good melting cheese will work, which is why cheddar cheese is my first choice. Other types of cheese that work are parmesan cheese, gruyere cheese, feta cheese, and pepper jack cheese.
I highly recommend using freshly grated cheese for optimal melting. Packaged cheese contains additives that can hinder its melting ability.
Serve these as a snack or you can even turn them into a light meal with a big bowl of romaine salad or a 3 ingredients salad.
Try experimenting with other cheeses and toppings to change these cheese toasts to suit your taste.
Mozzarella and basil - Replace the cheddar cheese with mozzarella cheese and toss in chopped basil and a little garlic powder or Italian seasoning.
Pesto and parmesan cheese - Replace the cheddar cheese with freshly grated parmesan cheese and add a teaspoon or two to taste of pesto sauce.
Blue cheese toast and caramelized onion - Replace the onion with caramelized onions and the cheddar cheese with blue cheese.
Taco cheese toast - Use pepper jack and ad a ½ teaspoon taco seasoning to the cheese mixture.
How to store leftovers
Leftover cheese toasts can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat them in the air fryer, microwave or oven.
- Leave enough space around each piece of bread to let the air circulate around the bread.
- Let the toasts rest for a few minutes before serving.
